CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Kelly texted. Dropped producer off. On my way to you. Want to get lunch?
I texted back saying I'd find a place and then went exploring. It was time to eat, and I wanted to check this town out. There were a number of choices on Main, all of which looked to have four-star Michelin ratings. I settled on a French restaurant named Gustav's.
The inside was like a Parisian café, with the smell of fresh baguettes in the air. A host in a tux seated me near the window. I ordered a glass of water (I don't always drink wine) and after texting the location to Kelly, sorted through my thoughts as I waited.
Kennedy's Landing was surreal. I'd never seen another town in Iowa like it. Money oozed out of every atom. Sherman even said they were going to have a money-cleansing ritual tonight. In spite of myself, I was looking forward to that.
I would have to visit my druids when I got back to let them know I was undercover and really wasn't going to join the Cult of Eternal Fear and Loathing. It pained me to think they might believe I'd leave them, but I didn't trust Sherman to keep my visit a secret.
There was no doubt in my mind that Sherman wanted to poach me to hurt his cousin. There was some deep-seated hatred there. Why? Stewie had never mentioned his cousin until he showed up at the Con. With as much energy that Sherman was putting into hurting Stewie, something must have happened between them at some point.
I'd like to know what that was. It might help Stewie's case if it were known that Sherman was actively trying to destroy him. He wanted Stewie in prison for murder, to lose his money by having me revoke Beetle Dork's rightsâsomething I couldn't do because I'd never owned the rights.
What could Stewie have done to inspire such hatred? Or was it all about jealousy? After comparing the two groups, the Cult of Eternal Fear and Loathing had all the bells and whistles. But was it real? Since it seemed more like a lavish clubhouse than a druid cult, my instincts told me that Sherman started the cult after Stewie started his. And they didn't seem committed to the cause. My cult did, although I wasn't really sure what that meant. They'd been more interested in Beetle Dork than rituals as of late.
More and more I was sure that Sherman lied about Stewie to get back at him. I just needed to know more. I sat there, sipping my water, smelling the baguettes, and lost in thought until Kelly walked in the door.
"Hey!" Kelly looked around as she sat down. "Is this place bizarre or what?"
The waiter came over and gave us menus. We ordered and waited for him to go out of earshot before continuing.
I took a sip of water. "You've never been here before either?"
Kelly shook her head. "I've never had any reason to. But nowâ¦"
I nodded. "You should see the Tabernacle of Terror, trademark pending.
